The original was produced by the artist for Madame de Pompadour and again for Catherine the Great.  It became the most famous visual representation of Cupid in the 18th century. The original is in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. This glazed  terra cotta statue is the same size as the original 32in H. 12in W. 18in D. Cupid or Eros was the ancient Roman and Greek god of erotic passion. He is shown warning the viewer to be discreet and yet his hand is ready to furtively draw an arrow from his quiver. had museums in Philadelphia and Baltimore where silhouettes were cut using a physiognotrace mechanism invented by John Hawkins (1772-1855).
