The original was produced by the artist for Madame de Pompadour and again for Catherine the Great. It became the most famous visual representation of Cupid in the 18th century. The original is in the collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. This glazed terra cotta statue is the same size as the original 32in H. 12in W. 18in D. Cupid or Eros was the ancient Roman and Greek god of erotic passion. He is shown warning the viewer to be discreet and yet his hand is ready to furtively draw an arrow from his quiver. Falconet's 18th century marble cupid statue was recently displayed in London in 2006 at the Somerset House in an exhibit entitled 'The Triumph of Eros: Art and Seduction in Eighteenth Century France.' $4,900.

Lewis' at bottom of each silhouette. Stamped 'MUSEUM' below each bust portrait. New frames, antique backing. Found in Maryland. Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) had museums in Philadelphia and Baltimore where silhouettes were cut using a physiognotrace mechanism invented by John Hawkins (1772-1855). This machine made a hollow cut image which would be placed over black or blue paper to be framed or put in albums. 'MUSEUM' was one of the two stamps used at the museum. Each frame measures 6 1/4in H. 5 1/4in W. Pair $700.
