33in H. 50 1/2in W. 20in D. This heavy bench is beautifully cast with crisp detail to the leaves and branches. 'Rustic' designed wooden garden furniture became popular in 18th century England and was shown in the English furniture design books. Then in the 19th century in the Industrial Revolution the 'Rustic' pattern was adopted by the new iron foundries for iron garden benches and chairs. It was then quickly copied by the American iron foundries. The botanical or naturalistic designs such as this example were the earliest designs done in cast iron garden furniture in the 19th century. 33 inches high, 50 1/2 inches wide, 20 inches deep.
Dated: 19 th century
Price: $3500 USD
Inquire

Sun, 05 Feb 12 02:14:24 -0600

All Products

GARDEN BENCH, CAST IRON & TWO CHAIRS, ANTIQUE, CLASSICAL DESIGN

Antique cast iron classical design bench and two large chairs with curved backs with swag decorated crest rails, lyre design on backs of the bench, chairs with compass rose design on backs, and with dolphin arm terminals and wooden slat seats. Floor model in three sections: the top with with clear glass with a heavy iron frame and finials, sitting over a glass and iron planting compartment sitting on an iron legged frame with shelf below. Circa 1900-1920. Wardian Cases were invented in the 1800's by Dr. Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward to allow for the overseas transportation of delicate plant species. During the Victorian age these glass enclosures were very popular. Inside a Wardian case vapor from leaf transpiration and the evaporation of water from the soil condensed on the glass and fell to rewet the soil, creating a humid junglelike envirorment. The closed case kept the air moist, the temperature moderate and blocked drafts. 48"H. 14 1/2 inches square.
